💚Why you will love this recipe

    • Easy to throw together, fuss-free, and ready in 30 minutes
    • Versatile and can be enjoyed as an appetizer, snack, or side dish
    • No parboiling is needed and can be air-fried straightaway
    • Highly versatile - feel free to add other seasonings to make this recipe your own!

    🥔Best potato to use

Using starchy potatoes instead of waxy ones is highly recommended to produce the fluffiest and crispiest air-fried potato slices. Listed below are some great varieties that are great for roasting:

    • Russet potatoes (My personal favorite!)
    • Yukon Gold potatoes
    • Red potatoes
    • Baby potatoes

Sweet potatoes - You can use sliced sweet potatoes instead of regular white ones. Just keep in mind that they cook slightly quicker, so keep an eye on them during the last few minutes of cooking.

    🧂What you will need

Ingredients needed like potato, olive oil, garlic powder, salt and pepper.

    📃Ingredient notes and substitutions

    • Potatoes - Use a starchy variety of potatoes like Russet or Yukon Gold. You can choose to peel the skin or leave it on.
    • Olive oil - Can be substituted with other neutral-tasting oils, for instance, canola or sunflower seed oil. You can also coat potatoes with some cooking spray to make this lower in fat.

    🔪How to make

Slicing potatoes - Using a sharp knife, slice potatoes into ¼-inch thick slices. Alternatively, you can use a mandolin slicer set to ¼ inch or 5mm.

Soaking - Soak potato slices in water for 15-30 minutes. When potatoes are done soaking, drain well and pat them dry using a tea towel.

Seasoning - Transfer potatoes to a bowl. Add oil, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Toss until potato slices are well coated.

Soaking potato slices in water in a glass bowl.
A bowl of seasoned potato slices on a white checkered teacloth.

Cooking - Place potatoes into an air fryer basket. It is ok to stack them, but I recommend keeping it to 2 layers. Cook at 200C/400F for 15-18 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through.

Cooked potato slices in an air fryer basket.

Serve - Serve air fryer potato slices with ketchup or vegan mayonnaise, and enjoy!

    ✅Helpful tips

    • Slicing potatoes evenly - Make sure the thickness of your potatoes is relatively uniform to ensure that they cook at the same rate.
    • Peeling potatoes - It comes down to personal preference; you can leave the skin on or peel it.
    • Do not overcrowd the air fryer - Overcrowding the air fryer will prevent potatoes from cooking properly. I recommend keeping it to 2 layers. You can always cook them in batches if your air fryer is smaller.
    • Cooking time - Will hugely depend on the size and model of your air fryer. If this is your first time making this recipe, keep an eye and check on them every 5 minutes or so to prevent them from burning.

    ✨Variations and add-ins

Cheesy potatoes - When they are almost finished, top them with shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese. Use plant-based cheese to keep this recipe vegan. Cook for another 1-2 minutes or until the cheese is melty and gooey.

Loaded potato slices - Top your air fryer potato slices with beef, turkey, or veggie mince, cheese, and condiments like guacamole and sour cream before serving.

Spice them up - Feel free to add herbs and spices that sound good! Some seasonings that work well include Italian herb, cajun seasoning, chili powder, and everything but the bagel seasoning.

Extra crispy - Toss in a tablespoon of cornstarch along with the oil and seasonings to make your potato slices ultra crispy.

    🍽How to serve

Here are some dishes and condiments that pair beautifully with these air fryer potato slices:

    • Dippings - Ketchup, sriracha mayo or plain mayo, fresh tomato salsa, guacamole
    • Savory breakfast bowl - pair potato slices with silken tofu scramble or scrambled eggs, avocado slices, and vegetables like grilled mushrooms and sauteed spinach.
    • Meaty mains - I love serving potatoes with my vegan roast beef and seitan BBQ ribs.
    • Omelette - regular or tofu omelette.
Dipping a potato slice in ketchup.

    ❄️Storing suggestions

Fridge - Store leftover air fryer potato slices in an airtight container, and they will last in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Freezer - These potato slices can be frozen for 3 months. Store them in freezer-friendly containers or freezer bags.

Reheating - Allow frozen potatoes to thaw overnight in the fridge. You can either reheat them in the oven preheated to 200C/400F for 4-5 minutes or in the air fryer for 3-4 minutes at 200C/400F. I do not recommend heating them in the microwave as they will not crisp up.

    ❔Commonly asked questions

Should I parboil my potatoes before cooking them in the air fryer?

You do not need to parboil potato slices before air frying them. As they are thin, they can be cooked quickly.

Why are my air fryer potato slices not crispy?

You might have overcrowded your air fryer, causing potato slices to cook unevenly. It is recommended that you keep it to 2 layers. If you have a smaller air fryer, cook potatoes in batches.

Other than that, you might also slice your potatoes too thick. You can easily fix this by cooking your potatoes longer.

Your potatoes might also turn out soggy if you do not dry them well enough, which causes them to steam rather than fry. Hence, I highly recommend patting dry sliced potatoes with tea towels or a napkin after soaking them.

Why do I need to soak the potato in water before air frying?

Soaking potatoes in water helps to draw out some starch to produce crispier potatoes.

There's no mention of what temperature to use for air frying. Or did I miss it?
