Start your morning right with this applesauce overnight oats that is creamy, delicious, and incredibly filling. Comes together in 5 minutes and makes for a great grab-and-go breakfast for busy mornings.

This applesauce oatmeal has quickly become my favorite meal prep recipe, alongside steel-cut oat cookies, banana flapjacks, and barley porridge.

A jar of overnight oats served with spoon with chia seeds, maple syrup, oats, and milk in the background.

Like my vegan baked oats, this applesauce overnight oats is a delicious way to use up a leftover applesauce! It adds sweetness and flavor to the oats, which means you won't need as much additional sweetener.

However, if applesauce is not your thing, check out my no chia seed overnight oats or chocolate protein overnight oats instead.

💚Why you will love applesauce overnight oats

  • A nutritious and filling breakfast packed with fiber
  • Low effort and only require 5 minutes of prep
  • Highly customizable - add your favorite mix-ins and toppings!
  • Budget-friendly and delicious

🌾What you will need

Ingredients needed like oats, applesauce, maple syrup, milk, chia seeds, cinnamon, and vanilla extract.
  • Oats - either rolled or quick oats will work; rolled oats yield a chewier overnight oats while quick oats yield a smoother consistency. Steel-cut oats WILL NOT work in this recipe (try my protein steel-cut oats instead).
  • Applesauce - Unsweetened applesauce is preferred; if yours is sweetened, reduce or omit the maple syrup. Either store-bought or homemade applesauce will work.
  • Milk - Feel free to use any milk, whether regular or plant-based alternatives like almond or soy milk.
  • Maple syrup - Can be substituted with another sweetener of your choice.
  • Pinch of salt - To enhance the flavors of applesauce overnight oats.

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

✨Variations and add-ins

  • Gluten-free - Make sure to use certified gluten-free oats.
  • Protein overnight oats - Add a serve of your preferred protein powder. More milk is needed to thin out the texture (or, check out my vegan protein overnight oats).
  • Spice it up - Add spices you like. Some great ones include apple pie spice, cinnamon, nutmeg, or cardamom.
  • Toppings - Top it with fruits like diced apples, apple compote, or berries, chopped nuts, nut butters, or yogurt.

Step 4: When ready to enjoy, give applesauce overnight oats a quick stir, adding more milk if needed.

✅Helpful tips

  • Make it in a jar - You can prep, store, and enjoy applesauce overnight oats in a 16-oz Mason jar.
  • Allow to sit for at least 4 hours - so oats can fully absorb the liquid and soften, yielding a creamier texture.
  • Adjust consistency before serving - Add more milk to thin if needed.
  • Heating overnight oats - Prefer warm oats? Heat it in the microwave at 30-second bursts, or until hot.
  • Add toppings last - Adding them right before serving ensures they stay fresh, especially for fruits and crunchy toppings.

❄️Meal prep and storage tips

Storing - This applesauce overnight oats can be refrigerated for 4 days, and frozen for 3 months. Allow oats to sit overnight before freezing.

Serving - For frozen oats, let it thaw overnight in the fridge. Add a splash of milk if needed and add desired toppings before serving.

Batch-make oats - Multiply ingredients, then mix everything in a large bowl. Divide them up using jars for convenience.

?Commonly asked questions

Can I heat overnight oats?

Although overnight oats are commonly served warm, you can enjoy them hot. Transfer oats to a microwave-safe bowl and heat them in 30-second bursts until hot, adding a splash of milk to thin the mixture if needed.

Alternatively, you could heat them in a saucepan on the stove instead.

How can I thicken my overnight oats?

If your overnight oats are too thin, you can thicken them by adding 1-2 teaspoons of chia seeds. Then, stir the mixture and let it sit for 5-10 minutes before enjoying. The chia seeds will absorb the liquid and thicken your oats.

Alternatively, add a few tablespoons of protein powder to runny oats. This will not only thicken the mixture but also provide a boost of protein, keeping you fuller for longer.

Can I make overnight oats with water?

Yes, overnight oats can be made with water instead of milk. Your oats will turn out less creamy, but you can make up for that creaminess by adding a spoonful of yogurt or nut butter.
