Beans are one of my favorite ingredients to work with. These little gems are a nutrition powerhouse packed with fiber and protein! Bonus that they are also super inexpensive.
But in terms of cooking, beans are highly versatile and can be used in a wide variety of dishes. Some of my other favorite recipes using black beans include my black bean burger and black bean Mexican rice.
💚Why you will love roasted black beans
- A healthier savory snack alternative that is satisfyingly crunchy and savory
- Simple 5-ingredient recipe with minimal prep needed
- Great as a portable, on-the-go snack
- Versatile - You can also use it as a salad topper, mix it into trail mixes, or top creamy soups (like my red lentil carrot soup).
🧂What you will need

- Black beans - I am using canned black beans for convenience, but feel free to use black beans cooked from scratch. If beans are NOT sodium-free, reduce the amount of salt added.
- Olive oil - Can be substituted with other neutral-tasting oils, including canola, sunflower, or rice bran oil.
- Seasonings - I'm going with the simple garlic powder, salt, and pepper combo, but you can add any seasoning or seasoning blends you like! The section below is some variations to get you started.
✨Flavor variations
- Curry powder - up to 1 tablespoon.
- Dial up the heat - Stir in ½-1 teaspoon of chili powder, chili flakes, or a dash of cayenne pepper.
- Herby roasted black beans - 1-2 teaspoons of Italian seasoning, or a mix of your favorite dried herbs (basil, dill, rosemary, cilantro, etc.)
- Zaa'tar - up to 1 teaspoon Zaa'tar spice blend.
- Make it cheesy - Add a generous sprinkle of nutritional yeast and optionally, dried herbs of choice.

Step 1: Drain and rinse your beans. Then, gently dry them using a napkin or kitchen towel.

Step 2: Add beans to a bowl and add in all seasonings. Gently toss until the seasonings are well distributed.

🍳Make air fryer roasted black beans
Spread beans in a single even layer in the air fryer basket (you might need to cook in batches if your air fryer is small). Cook at 200 °C/400 °F for 8-12 minutes, stirring halfway through, until crispy.

✔Helpful tips
- Thoroughly dry beans - Excess moisture might prevent beans from turning crispy. This is why it is recommended to dry them using paper towels or a tea towel.
- Spread beans evenly on the baking pan - Beans should be spread in a single layer, without overlapping, to yield the crispiest black beans.
- Be careful not to burn them - Keep an eye on the last few minutes of cooking and pull them out once browned; they will continue to crisp up as they cool.

🍲Ways to use roasted black beans
- As a snack - Simply have it on its own for a quick and nutritious snack. It is also great as a movie snack, or to fill lunchboxes.
- On salads or burrito bowls - Toss a handful of roasted black beans into your salads as they add tons of flavor and texture. I especially love adding it to my protein pasta salad and Indian quinoa salad.
- As a topping for soups - Love adding them to my broccoli potato soup or lentil carrot soup for some crunch and protein.
❄️Storing leftovers
Let roasted black beans cool completely, then transfer to an airtight container. They will stay crispy at room temperature for 2 -3 days, or in the fridge for up to a week.
When ready to enjoy, have the black beans as it is. Reheating is not recommended, as they burn easily.

Excellent! I air-fried 12 minutes, flipping a few times.
Modifications -
added chopped onion, garlic, orange pepper.
used 1 tsp olive oil plus spray to coat
Didn't use salt or pepper cooking, but put a touch of chocolate ghost pepper salt on afterward
Had over brown rice - wish I had tortillas.
