🧂What you will need
📃Ingredients notes and substitutions
- Black beans - Both canned black beans or beans cooked from scratch can be used in this recipe. I personally prefer using salted canned black beans, but feel free to use unsalted ones if you are concern about your sodium intake.
- Olive oil - Othe neutral-tasting oil like canola or avocado oil will work as well.
🔪How to make
Here is a quick rundown of the steps to make roasted black beans. The full detailed recipe will be in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Drain your beans and gently dry them using a napkin or some kitchen towels.
Add beans to a bowl and add in all seasonings. Toss until the seasonings are well distributed.
Spread them out on a lined baking sheet. Bake for 30-40 minutes, stirring it halfway through. Alternatively, you can cook them in the air fryer for 8-10 minutes at 200C/400F. Let them cool down slightly before digging in!
✔Helpful tips
- Make sure to pat them dry before using. Excess moisture might affect the end result, and your roasted black beans might not be as crispy.
- For a lower fat version, you can use some cooking spray instead of oil.
- Roasting time will vary slightly depending on how soft your beans are. Hence, I highly recommend keeping a close eye on the last 10 minutes of cooking to prevent your beans from burning.
- Beans will continue to crisp up as they cool. So it is totally ok if they are slightly soft the moment you pull them out from the oven!
- If your beans lose their crispiness and turn stale after a few days, just heat them for 2-3 minutes on the oven preheat to 200C/400F to revive them.
- Let roasted black beans cool completely before storing them in an airtight container or glass jar. They will last at room temperature for about a week.
✨Flavors variations
Here are some seasoning pairing ideas if you want to spice up your black beans. With that being said, feel free to add whatever spices or seasonings you like to suit your taste!
Cajun - 2-3 teaspoons of cajun seasoning blend + salt (you can also make your own cajun seasoning)
Italian - 1-2 teaspoons of Italian seasoning + salt
Curry - ½ teaspoon curry powder + ½ teaspoon ground coriander (optional) + ¼ teaspoon onion powder + ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
Cheesy - 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast + ¼ teaspoon garlic powder + salt
Ranch - ¼ teaspoon garlic powder + ¼ teaspoon onion powder + ¼ teaspoon dried dill + ¼ teaspoon dried parsley
🍲How to serve
- As a snack - Simply have its on its own as a quick and nutritious snack. It is also a great movie night snack too!
- On salads - Toss a handful of roasted black beans into your salads in place of croutons. They add tons of flavor and texture! I especially love adding it on my protein pasta salad and Indian quinoa salad.
- As a topping for soups - Add them on this pumpkin potato soup or this cheesy potato broccoli soup for some crunch and protein.
- In wraps and burritos - Spice up your favorite burrito by adding in some of them in.

Excellent! I air-fried 12 minutes, flipping a few times.
Modifications -
added chopped onion, garlic, orange pepper.
used 1 tsp olive oil plus spray to coat
Didn't use salt or pepper cooking, but put a touch of chocolate ghost pepper salt on afterward
Had over brown rice - wish I had tortillas.
