🧂What you will need
📃Ingredients notes and substitutions
- Black beans - I prefer using canned black beans for convenience, but you can also use black beans cooked from dry. You will need around 1 ¾ cups of homemade black beans.
- Olive oil - Helps to crisp up and allows seasonings to adhere better to black beans. It can be substituted with other neutral-tasting oils (such as canola or sunflower seed oil).
- Seasonings - I use only garlic powder, salt, and pepper to keep things simple. However, feel free to add other seasonings or spices that sound good!
🔪How to make
Drain and rinse your beans. Then, gently dry them using a napkin or kitchen towel.
Add beans to a bowl and add in all seasonings. Gently toss until the seasonings are well distributed.
Spread them out on a lined baking sheet. Bake for 30-40 minutes, until black beans are crispy on the outside. Give it a stir halfway through cooking.
Allow roasted black beans to cool for 5 minutes before digging in!
✔Helpful tips
- Spread the beans evenly on the tray - Ensure that the beans are spread out evenly in one layer. This allows them to crisp out properly.
- Be careful not to burn them - Due to their smaller size, Black beans tend to burn easily. They are cooked once they are crispy outside. They will continue to cook out of the oven, so don't worry if the insides are still slightly moist.
- Customize the flavors - Feel free to flavor your beans however you like! Cajun seasoning, curry powder, Italian herbs, and taco seasonings are great spice blends to add to this recipe. For a cheesy flavor, add some parmesan or vegan parmesan cheese.
- Air fryer version - Spread beans out in a lined air fryer container, and cook at 200C/400F for 8-12 minutes, stirring them halfway through.

🍲Using roasted black beans
- As a snack - Simply have it on its own for a quick and nutritious snack. It is also great as a movie snack, or to fill lunchboxes.
- On salads or burrito bowls - Toss a handful of roasted black beans into your salads as they add tons of flavor and texture. I especially love adding it to my protein pasta salad and Indian quinoa salad.
- As a topping for soups - Love adding them to my broccoli potato soup or lentil carrot soup for some crunch and protein.
❄️Storing suggestions
Room temperature - Allow the roasted black beans to cool completely, then store them in an airtight container or jar. They can be stored at room temperature for 2-3 days.
Fridge - If you want to store them for longer, I recommend keeping them in the fridge for up to a week. Enjoy them cold, or lightly heat them in the oven before digging in!
📖 Recipe

- generous pinch of black pepper
Instructions
- If using oven, preheat it to 200C/400F.
- Drain your beans from the can and rinse them with water.
- Gently dry them using a napkin or some kitchen towels.
- Transfer black beans to a large bowl and add in all seasonings. Gently toss until seasonings are well distributed.

Notes
- Keep a close eye on while cooking - Especially towards the end of baking. When done cooking, they should be crispy outside without being burnt.
- Beans will continue to crisp as they cool - It is normal for them to still be slightly soft in the middle when you first take them out from the oven. They will crisp out further while cooling.

Excellent! I air-fried 12 minutes, flipping a few times.
Modifications -
added chopped onion, garlic, orange pepper.
used 1 tsp olive oil plus spray to coat
Didn't use salt or pepper cooking, but put a touch of chocolate ghost pepper salt on afterward
Had over brown rice - wish I had tortillas.
