📃Ingredient notes and substitutions
- Bananas - I prefer using frozen bananas as it makes super thick smoothies. You can also use fresh bananas.
- Oatmeal - Both quick or rolled oats will work in this recipe. Do use certified gluten-free oats if you are allergic to gluten.
- Protein powder - An optional ingredient, but I highly recommend adding it to bump up the protein content of this banana oatmeal smoothie significantly. Choose a flavor that you like. I am using a vanilla protein powder blend.
- Milk - Any kind of milk will work in this recipe. I am using soy milk to bump up the protein content further.
- Maple syrup - You can substitute it with any sweetener you prefer, like sugar-free syrup, honey, or agave syrup.
🔪How to make
Place everything into a high-speed blender, and blend until smooth. You should add more milk if the mixture is too thick to blend. Enjoy your peanut butter banana oatmeal smoothie immediately.
✅Helpful tips
- Adjust the consistency of your smoothie by using less or more milk. I highly recommend starting with less milk: you can add more later if needed.
- Start to blend your smoothie at a lower speed. You can gradually increase the speed when the ingredients start coming together.
- If you make smoothies often, I recommend investing in a high-speed blender like Vitamix. It makes the blending process so much easier and quicker!
- Add a handful of ice to chill your smoothie if you are using fresh bananas.
🍓Fun smoothie add-ins
Berries - Any berries go well with the flavors of this banana oatmeal smoothie! Both fresh and frozen berries will work.
Seeds - Add a spoonful of flax, chia, or hemp seeds for additional protein and healthy fats.
Veggies - Smoothies are a great way to sneak in vegetables! Choose veggies that are neutral in flavor, like frozen zucchini chunks, cauliflower florets, or spinach.
Lower fat - For a lower fat (yet higher protein) version, you can substitute peanut butter with 2-3 tablespoons of peanut butter powder, like PB2. Or, check out my peanut butter powder smoothie.
Yogurt - Adds extra creaminess and richness to this banana oatmeal smoothie. Both plant-based yogurts and regular dairy yogurt will work.
No banana - Replace banana with ½ cup of berries or more oatmeal (up to 3 tablespoons). Add a handful of ice to chill the smoothie. You might need to adjust the amount of milk used. Or, you can check out my peanut butter smoothie without banana.
❄️Storing suggestions
Fridge - Leftover smoothie can be refrigerated for 2-3 days. As the banana oxidizes, the color will turn brownish, but it is safe to be consumed.
Freezer - To prep ahead, you can freeze your smoothie in ice cube trays. When ready to enjoy, blend the frozen smoothie cubes with some milk.
❔Commonly asked questions
Oats are safe to be consumed raw. Hence, you can add raw oats to your smoothie without soaking or cooking them beforehand.
Both quick and rolled oats work well in smoothies. Do not use steel-cut oats, as they are hard to be broken down, yielding a gritty smoothie.
Oatmeal is a slow-digesting carbohydrate, and adding oats to smoothies makes them much more filling and satisfying. Other than that, the gelling properties of oatmeal will give smoothies extra richness and creaminess!
You can replace bananas with ½-1 cup of frozen berries. Alternatively, add more oats (up to 3 tablespoons) and a handful of ice to replace frozen bananas. You might need to adjust the amount of milk added to achieve the desired thickness.
It is also recommended that you increase the amount of maple syrup used.
